Raising the pitch for removal of former apex court judge A.K. Ganguly, accused of sexually harassing a law intern, as West Bengal human rights panel chief, Additional Solicitor General Indira Jaising Sunday rubbished allegation of over-zealousness in the issue.
"What the Supreme Court has done is an internal as well as just procedure to look into the complaint," said Jaising here, adding that it would be "unjust" to describe the Supreme Court's intervention in the matter as over-zealousness.
"There was no other forum for the (victim) to approach," said Jaising who has written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking Ganguly's removal.
"It is the duty of the central government to remove Ganguly as human rights chairperson, so I have written to the PM," she said, adding that she was yet to get a response for her letter.
Defending Ganguly, former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee had earlier alleged "over-zealousness" of the Supreme Court probe panel which had indicted Ganguly of sexual harassment.
Accused of sexual harassment and indicted by the Supreme Court probe panel, the chorus for Ganguly removal has been gaining ground with state's ruling Trinamool Congress the most vociferous.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has twice written to President Pranab Mukherjee for his removal.
Ganguly has refuted all the allegations and refused to step down.
