Police Monday initiated investigation into the alleged molestation of a nursery student after angry parents and guardians stormed a city school claiming "inaction".
Besides the school initiating an internal enquiry, West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said he has sought a report on the matter from the school.
According to police, a school bus driver molested the child earlier in the month when the students were rehearsing for an inter-school cultural event at a different venue.
Alleging the school authorities were trying to hush up the matter , scores of parents and guardians demonstrated at the school demanding police action.
"We have started a preliminary investigation on the basis of a letter written by the victim's parents to the school authorities, informing them about the incident," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Suburban Division) Santosh Pandey.
The school later issued a statement admitting that the parents had registered a complaint of sexual abuse with the school authorities and said it had initiated a probe in the matter.
"The school has taken the complaint seriously and started an internal inquiry. Immediately," read the statement by the school, claiming that police were duly informed about the incident.
In a similar incident, a civic police volunteer was Monday arrested for allegedly molesting a class four girl student in Bahrampur in Murshidabad district.
The accused, Amit Sarkar, was thrashed by parents and guardians after the victim identified him. He was later handed over to police.
"We have arrested Amit Sarkar for allegedly molesting a girl student of a government school here. According to the complaint, the accused made sexual advances towards the victim," said an officer of Baharampur police station.
