A gangster, in his late 20s, was killed and three others injured in a gang war between nine members of two rival groups here Sunday, police said.

The gang war took place in Rani Bagh in north Delhi around 3 a.m. when members of the rival groups came across each other in a market and opened fire.

As many as 15 shots are estimated to have been fired during the incident, which resulted in the death of one Anil, belonging to Neetu Dhabodia gang, who was attacked by four members of Neeraj Bawana gang.

Two members of Neetu Dhabodia gang -- identified as Pradeep and Anshul -- were injured in the firing while two other group members Anjum and Sonu escaped from the spot before police reached the spot.

Raghu, from Neeraj Bawana gang, was injured in the firing and his associates Ashok and Monu were nabbed from the spot while another of their associates Naveen managed to flee.

"Four men from the Neeraj Bawana gang and five belonging to the Neetu Dhabodia gang confronted each other on Rani Bagh's road number 44," Deputy Commissioner of Police, N. Gnana Sambandan, told IANS.

"They were armed with country-made weapons and clashed with each other. Shots rang out in the entire area and someone from one of the residential colonies located nearby informed police," he said.

All the injured were rushed to the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital where one of them, later identified as Anil, was declared dead.

"Neetu, the leader of one of the gangs involved, was recently gunned down in an encounter. This not only unnerved his gang, but has prompted its rivals to try and establish their own supremacy in the area," said the official.

"We have arrested two men. The other three gang members will be arrested after they are discharged from hospital. We are now looking for the others involved in the incident," he said.
