Citing inadequate infrastructure, newly appointed West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee Thursday said online admission to undergraduate courses in state-run colleges is not mandatory anymore.
"It was announced that the admission to UG courses to government funded colleges in the state will be done online, but we are not yet ready with the software required for the purpose. Moreover, many colleges do not have connectivity. So we can't go for online admissions for 2014-15," Chatterjee, who recently replaced Bratya Basu in the post, told reporters here.
With a view to curb malpractices, Basu had advocated that the state run universities start admissions online. Following which the state government, through a recent notification, had made online admission mandatory from academic year 2014-15 to all UG courses in state-funded colleges.
However, institutions that have adequate infrastructure and have been admitting students online can continue with the process.
