A total of 114,786 cases were settled and compensation of approximately Rs.40 crore was awarded to claimants Saturday during the national Lok Adalat in Jammu and Kashmir, the authorities said.

Relief claims of flood-affected people were also settled.

An amount of Rs.32 crore was recovered in bank cases, said a statement issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Legal Services Authority here.

Under the supervision of Jammu and Kashmir High Court Chief Justice M.M. Kumar, Lok Adalats were organised across the state at tehsil, district and high court levels with the cooperation of advocates, bank officials and insurance officials among others.

Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir of the high court, who is also the executive chairman of the state legal services authority, inaugurated the Lok Adalat at high court complex.

Justice Mir told media persons that Lok Adalat was an effective means of resolving disputes and help reduce pendency of cases in courts, besides saving time and money of the litigants.

He said relations between the litigants are not strained in the process and they remain cordial as they mutually agree to solve their dispute.

Free legal consultation was extended to the people to resolve their disputes amicably, he said.

Legal Aid Clinics across the state were also extending help to the people, especially in resolving cases of flood victims, as well as generating awareness about legal rights, he said.
