Over 400,000 teachers at the elementary level are untrained, parliament was told Wednesday.
"There are 4.50 lakh untrained teachers at the elementary level, including in primary schools, as in May 2014," Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani said in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
She added the reason for this is that some states/union territories do not have "adequate number of institutions imparting pre-service teacher education".
The pre-service teacher education prepares teachers for the school system.
