Parliamentary approval was accorded to the bill amending the National Institutes of Technology, Science Education and Research Act, 2007 (NITSER Act) to declare them 'Institutes of National Importance' with the Rajya Sabha passing the measure on Wednesday.
The NITSER Act also provides for research, training and dissemination of knowledge in these institutions.
The 2007 Act was amended in 2012 to include a number of new institutes within its ambit with aSecond Schedule added to include new Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research at Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh) and Berhampur (Odisha).
The Lok Sabha has already passed the Bill.
