Passenger car sales down 10 percent in April

High fuel and interest costs dented domestic passenger cars sales by 10.15 percent in April, industry data showed Friday.

Data furnished by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed that 135,433 units were sold in the month under review as against of 150,737 units in the corresponding month of last year.

Total passenger vehicle sales which includes cars, utility vehicles and vans in the month under review went down by 9.50 percent at 188,541 units from an off-take of 208,341 units in April 2013.

For last month, SIAM reported a 24 percent decline in sales of commercial vehicles which is a key indicator of economic activity.

Sales stood at 43,080 units from 56,683 units in the corresponding month of last year.

Three-wheeler sales slumped by by 2.17 units at 33,602 units from 34,348 units sold in the corresponding month of last year.

However, total two-wheeler sales in the month under review grew by 11.67 percent at 1,304,447 units from 1,168,100 units sold in the corresponding month of 2013.

Total scooter sales in the month under review grew by 26.08 percent at 329,680 units from 261,475 units sold in the like period of last year.

Total motorcycle sales increased by 8.06 percent at 911,908 units from an off-take of 843,909 units in April last year.

Total exports for the month went up by 12.98 percent at 272,122 units from 240,865 units being shipped out.

Total vehicle sales in April grew by 6.96 percent at 1,569,670 units from 1,467,472 units sold in the corresponding month of last year.
