The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) Tuesday proposed power tariff hike across all the consuming categories.
Reacting to the proposal, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa announced that the government would provide subsidy for the poor so that they are not burdened by the proposed hike.
According to TNERC, it suo moto decided to go ahead on proposing the tariff revision as the state government undertaking Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) failed to file its tariff revision plan of 2014-15.
According to TNERC, the revenue gap for TANGEDCO is Rs.6,854 crore is sought to be bridged by revising the power rates for all consumers.
After hearing the public, the final tariff rates will be notified, TNERC said.
For the domestic consumers, the rate hike per unit ranges between 40 paise to 85 paise depending on the power consumed.
The TNERC has proposed to hike the power rate per unit by Rs.1.72 to Rs.7.22 for industries.
For commercial users, the rate proposed is Rs.8.05 per unit from the current Rs.7 per unit.
