President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday condoled the death of Maharashtra's former deputy chief minister Raosaheb Ramrao Patil.
In a condolence message to his wife, Suman R.R. Patil, Mukherjee said, "I am saddened to learn about the passing away of R.R. Patil."
"Patil served the state of Maharashtra as deputy chief minister, home minister and member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. His immense contribution to the welfare of the state of Maharashtra will always be remembered," he added.
The president said in his death, the nation had "lost a leader who was always in touch with the grassroots of society."
"I pray to the Almighty to give your family and you the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss. Please accept my heartfelt condolences and convey the same to all members of your family," he added.
Patil, who was the state home minister during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, passed away Monday evening after a battle with oral cancer. He was 57.
