Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday visited the Nepal embassy here nearly a week after the devastating earthquake struck the Himalayan nation and condoled the deaths.

"Over the last week the world has watched in horror as the true scale of the tragedy in Nepal unfolded before us. Some wounds will never heal, but as Nepal faces the hard task of rebuilding each broken life and broken buildings, the people of India stand with you in strength and solidarity.

"In the years to come, we will see a stronger, more prosperous, even beautiful Nepal whose... spirit will rise above present despair and inspire the world," he wrote in the visitor's book.

The Congress vice president also met new Nepalese envoy Deep Kumar Upadhyay.

"I wanted to come express my support for people of Nepal...The Congress is coordinating some help," Gandhi told reporters after the meeting.

The earthquake on April 25, measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale, has claimed the lives of over 6,100 people and left 10,000 injured as per the official account.

The death toll, however, continues to rise amidst the relief and rescue work being carried out by several countries, including India.
