Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday asked the Jammu and Kashmir authorities to ensure safety of students at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Srinagar where clashes erupted between two groups after the India-West Indies cricket match on Thursday.

"Spoke to Governor Jammu and Kashmir and DGP (director general of police) regarding the situation in NIT Srinagar. I assure the students that they should not worry about their security," Rajnath Singh said.

"I have instructed the DGP Jammu and Kashmir to send a team of officers to NIT Srinagar to assure the students of their safety and security," the home minister added in a series of tweets.

Clashes were sparked off on the campus in Hazratbal, Srinagar, after a group of Kashmiri students celebrated the West Indies win over the Indian cricket team in the semi-final of the ICC World T-20.

Non-Kashmiri students objected to the celebrations, causing clashes on the campus. The authorities then closed the institute until further notice.
