Calling the Robotic O-Arm technology a boon for neurosurgeons, doctors on Friday said the innovative surgical imaging system can allow surgeons to perform minimally invasive spine surgeries with greater precision, accuracy and most importantly safety.

Doctors at the Agrim Institute of Neurosciences said the Robotic O-Arm helps to visualize the complete spinal structure in real time.

"With provision of superior image quality and in-depth details of the smallest portion of the image sets, Robotic O -Arm is a boon for the surgeons to plan, implement and confirm the success of the surgery as soon as the patient even leaves the operating room," said S.K. Rajan, head of Spine Surgery, at Agrim Institute of Neurosciences.

Agrims Institute of Neurosciences is part of Artemis hospital and caters to the medical requirement to neuro patients of Haryana.

Rajan, a prominent neurosurgeon, said O-Arm provides surgeons with better exactness and lowers the risks and complication rates.

According to doctors, the O-Arm is just like a GPS system. It forms a ring around the patient's body during surgery and can be rotated in any direction (360 degrees) to take real time moving x-rays and 3D vision of the affected location.

The need to transport the patient for various imaging is eliminated as the robot can be opened and removed when done with it and hence the patient need not be moved in between a surgery. The system picks the image of the complete anatomy including bones and implants.

Talking on the reasons why O- Arm was safe, Aditya Gupta, Director of Neurosurgery ar Agrims Institute said: "O-Arm visioning system has the potential to eliminate tissue and muscle disruption, blood loss during the surgery and post operative deformities making it safer for the patients with better outcome and recovery."

"Being a completely mobile setup, the system can be moved to desired location within no time and can also be used in parallel interventions as well."
