Artist and sculptor Shiv Singh, who had been ailing, died on Friday, his family said.
Singh, 68, was suffering from cancer but died due to heart failure in Panchkula town near here, said a family member.
Punjab Cultural Affairs Minister Sohan Singh Thandal expressed sorrow over his demise.
In his condolence message, he said Shiv Singh was one of the greatest artists, sculptors who brought the art of Punjab on the global landscape.
Shiv Singh was born in Punjab's Hoshiarpur in 1938.
"I am the black man, not the black sheep," was Singh's common saying about his dress code which was all black.
