Despite closing the gap on the top four in La Liga standings with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo, a number of Villarreal footballers acknowledged on Monday that ending the current domestic league in the fourth place will be a tough mission.
Sunday's victory came from a goal by Villarreal striker Roberto Soldado, pushing his side into fifth place in La Liga. The Yellow Submarines are now just four points behind fourth place, currently held by Atletico Madrid, who do not want to lose more ground to secure a place in the UEFA Champions League next season, reports Efe.
Villarreal midfielder Manu Trigueros said although the team is having a good moment, they still have to add more points to guarantee a place in a European Championship.
He acknowledged that that it is not easy to end up in fourth position, because Atletico Madrid are clinging to it, and still have other tricks up their sleeves.
Defender Alvaro Gonzalez said that Villarreal's ultimate objective is to play in the Champions League, and when that happens, they will start searching for bigger targets.
