A man in the garb of a seer tried to rape a minor girl in the state capital Saturday, police said.
The incident took place in the Aliganj locality when a man, Baba Chattu, came to a house and sought alms and mustard oil to be offered to "Shani Dev".
As a seven-year-old girl came out to give him some oil for the deity, the man held her hand and tried to force himself upon her. The girl raised an alarm and the family members and neighbours came to her rescue. They also overpowered the seer and bashed him up. He was later handed over to the police.
The girl told police that the man first molested her and before she could understand what he was doing, he started sexually assaulting her after which she raised an alarm.
"We have arrested the man and booked him under relevant sections of the IPC," a police official said.
