Seven criminals who looted jewellery at gun points from six women returning by bus from a wedding function have been arrested, police said on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as Kuldeep, 22, Vipin, 23, Manish, 22, Ajmal, 23, Karambeer,24, Raj Kumar, 26 and Mann Singh, 26, residents of Khanpur, Tigri, Devli and Sangam Vihar area of south Delhi.
"All the accused persons, some of whom are auto-drivers, were arrested in separate raids at their hideouts on Monday late night and Tuesday morning on a tip off. They have been involved in various criminal activities in their localities earlier. Some of them are drugs addicts," Deputy Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh told IANS.
"During investigations in the case, teams found an auto lying unattended in the area and suspected it could be involved in the crime. At the same time, a PCR call was received from a person later identified as Raj Kumar claiming to be its owner," he said.
When Raj Kumar who reported that his vehicle was stolen was called to join the probe, he switched off his phone. However, he was soon traced and apprehended and spilled the beans, naming the other gang members involved in the crime, Singh added.
Raj Kumar told police that he received a tip off about the women wearing costly jewellery were returning from a marriage function from Swaroop Nagar area to Sangam Vihar in south Delhi and hatched a plan to loot them, Singh said.
The women passengers were targeted late Sunday night when the bus reached Khanpur.
