Singapore Slammers notched up their second win of the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), beating UAE Royals 27-25 in a close contest here Thursday.
Women's World No.1 Serena Williams produced an influential performance for Singapore, edging out Caroline Wozniacki 6-5 in the opening match of the tie, and then teaming up with Tomas Berdych for a 6-4 win in the mixed doubles contest.
Goran Ivanisevic cut the deficit for the Royals after defeating Patrick Rafter 6-4 in the battle of the 'icons'.
But Berdych pushed Singapore closer to victory with another 6-4 win over Marin Cilic in the men's singles match, setting the scene for the crucial final set.
In the men's doubles, Lleyton Hewitt and Nick Kyrgios suffered a 5-6 defeat to Cilic and Nenad Zimonjic, but Singapore still remained two points ahead in the final tally.
