Youth Congress workers on Wednesday burnt effigies of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Lalit Modi and demanded the removal of the union minister as well as Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje over the controversy on travel documents to the former IPL chief.

Holding posters and placards that said "Remove Sushma and Vasundhara for unholy nexus with Lalit Modi" and "PM silent on Sushma-Lalit deal", the agitators staged a protest in south Kolkata's Bhowanipore against the BJP-led central government.

The protestors shouted slogans and questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on the issue.

The external affairs minister is facing flak for having helped Lalit Modi procure documents to travel to Portugal in 2014. Lalit Modi, who is wanted by the Enforcement Directorate for alleged financial impropriety in the money-spinning IPL, is currently staying in London.

Though Sushma Swaraj clarified that she helped Lalit Modi on "humanitarian grounds", the opposition has been demanding that she quit as minister.

On Tuesday, the name of Vasundhara Raje cropped up, with allegations that she testified in favour of the former IPL chief's British immigration application in 2011.
