Seven people, including five policemen and two civilians, were injured Thursday when militants attacked a police station in Kathua district of Jammu region.
Police sources told IANS that militants attacked the Hira Nagar police station in Kathua district early Thursday morning.
"Militants used grenades and automatic weapons to attack the Hira Nagar police station today (Thursday) morning. Five police personnel, and two civilians have been injured in this attack."
"All the injured have suffered critical splinter and bullet injuries. Senior police and army officials have rushed to the spot and reinforcements have also been rushed to tackle the situation," police sources said.
Hira Nagar police station is barely seven km away from the international border in Kathua district.
Same sources said three militants in an autorikshaw came to attack the police station Thursday morning.
"The guerrillas had stolen a truck from inside the Hira Nagar police station after carrying out the terror attack and have moved out of the area in this truck," police sources said.
After moving out in the stolen truck on the Pathankote-Jammu highway, the militants have now started firing at Samba town on the highway.
Chaos and panic has gripped the entire area and traffic on the Pathankote-Jammu highway has been halted.
The militant attack on Hira Nagar police station has come barely three days ahead of the breakfast meeting between Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharief in New York on the sidelines of the UN general assembly meet.
