The Tamil Nadu Assembly was adjourned on Thursday without transacting any business after paying rich tributes to DMK leader and five-time Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who died in August last year.
After adopting a condolence resolution moved by Leader of the House and Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam mourning the deaths of Karunanidhi and AIADMK MLA A.K. Bose, the members observed two minutes silence.
Moving the resolution, Panneerselvam said Karunanidhi was one of the senior most political leaders in the country and had the distinction of winning all the Assembly elections he fought since 1957.
He said Karunanidhi first became the Chief Minister in 1969 and since then had served as Chief Minister five times.
The House expresses its deep shock and anguish over the death of Karunanidhi, who was a member of the Assembly.
Panneerselvam said right from the age of 14, Karunanidhi involved himself in social movements and worked to achieve social justice.
He was also a great dialogue writer for films through which he created social awareness. His love for Tamil language won universal admiration.
Panneerselvam described Karunanidhi's death as a big loss to Tamil Nadu and offered the House' condolences to his son and Leader of the Opposition M.K. Stalin and members of the DMK party.
Chief Minister K. Palaniswami also paid rich tributes to Karunanidhi. He recalled some of the fond moments in the Assembly when Karunandihi was the Chief Minister.
After the House was adjourned, Stalin met Speaker P. Dhanapal and thanked him, the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister for adopting a condolence resolution for Karunanidhi.
