Thieves in Rajasthan have stolen 77 crates of tomatoes estimated at around Rs.1.25 lakh, police said Saturday.
Each box contained about 30-40 kg of tomatoes. The boxes were stolen from Chomu, about 40 km from Jaipur.
A man named Jagdish said in a police complaint that he kept some vegetables including tomatoes in his shop Thursday night. However, when he went there Friday morning, he saw that 77 boxes of tomatoes were missing.
Prices of tomatoes have recently gone sky-high. They are being sold at Rs.50-60 per kg in retail, while in the wholesale market, the price is Rs.35-40 per kg.
Earlier this month, 75 kg of tomatoes were stolen from shops in Dusa, over 60 km from here.
