The Trinamool Congress Wednesday made a veiled criticism of the poll schedule announced by the Election Commission, saying it could not agree with some of the decisions like holding five-phase polls in West Bengal.

"We are not in agreement with some decisions of the Election Commission. In some states, polling will be over in a day, while in our state it will be a staggered five-day process," Trinamool all India general secretary Mukul Roy told media persons here.

Roy also indirectly referred to the commission deciding to split the elections in Murshidabad district constituencies into two phases.

While the district's Jangipur and Murshidabad constituencies would go to the polls April 24, Baharampur will vote in the last phase May 12.

Railway Minister and state Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is tipped to be the Congress candidate from Baharampur.

Without naming Chowdhury, Roy said: "In one seat, polling is being held separately to give advantage to a particular leader, it seems. But then, announcing the poll schedule is the Election Commission's prerogative. We will abide by the EC guidelines."

"At the same time, we know that the Election Commission has succeeded in instilling confidence in the people about the polls being free and fair," he said.
