Two men have been killed and at least 17 other people were shot in a 17-hour time span beginning Friday morning.
Chicago Tribune reported on Saturday that this is an equivalent of someone shot every 53 minutes.
A 27-year-old man was shot multiple times in the South Chicago neighbourhood and pronounced dead in hospital afterwards; and a 26-year-old man was killed in the 200 block of West Garfield Boulevard, Xinhua reported.
The shooting victims also include a five-year-old girl hit by a stray bullet and a 73-year-old man shot in the face.
Chicago Police Department is bracing for increased violence.
Chicago has just experienced the deadliest May in the past month, when 66 were killed.
