Two people died and two fell ill Thursday after inhaling toxic gas while cleaning a sewer here, police said.
A contractor and his assistant were arrested for negligence after the incident took place on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon (MG) road, police said.
Rakesh, Ravinder and two other workers were cleaning a gutter, when Ravinder fell into the sewer. Rakesh and the other two tried to rescue him but were trapped themselves.
Fire brigade personnel however pulled them out. Ravinder and Rakesh were declared dead by doctors while the condition of the other two is stated to be critical.
Police arrested contractor Subhash and his assistant for negligence. All four cleaners were working without essential safety kits, they said.
