Two brick kiln labourers were shot dead by unidentified assailants in Bihar's Jehanabad district, police said on Sunday.

The owner of the brick kiln suspected that Maoists were behind the killings as he had refused to pay levy to them.

But district police officials said it appeared to be a revenge-killing. The incident took place at Manpur brick kiln under Ghosi police station in the early hours of Sunday.

The victims have been identified as Mohan Kumar and Vijay Lal. They were residents of Kosambi district of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.

Hundreds of labourers from Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Odisha work in brick kilns across Bihar.
