The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has announced closure of several camps holding displaced people in the Democratic Republic of Congo's North Kivu province, the media reported on Thursday.

UNHCR on Wednesday said the closure of the camps was a result of consultations with country authorities and the entire humanitarian community, Xinhua news agency reported.

"The process that targets about 2,200 displaced persons, is part of efforts to search for sustainable solutions and improvement of the humanitarian response in displacement sites," said Simon Englebert Lubuku, the UNHCR spokesman in the central African country.

"A majority of the displaced persons chose to settle in the villages of their own choice while 14 percent among them wished to be transferred to other sites," the spokesman added.

The UN refugee agency said refugees who had decided to settle in a village will be provided with support in terms of transport and food.
