The US on Thursday announced an additional $1.745 million for demining in Sri Lanka's former war theatre.

US ambassador Atul Keshap conveyed this to minister D.M. Swaminathan, saying the funding would be for international and domestic partners and the National Mine Action Committee.

In total, the US has dedicated over $43 million for demining assistance in Sri Lanka since 1993.

Keshap and Swaminathan also discussed ongoing demining work in northern and eastern Sri Lanka where the Tamil Tigers fought for a separate state for decades before being crushed in 2009.
