Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), led by G.K.Vasan, announced on Saturday that it has joined the DMDK-People Welfare Front (PWF) alliance and would contest in 26 seats in the May 16 assembly polls.

With TMC's entry, the five-party alliance has become a six-party alliance crossing swords with AIADMK, DMK, PMK and others.

The PWF is a combine of two Communist parties, Dalit party VCK and Vaiko-led MDMK.

As per the agreement signed by TMC and others in the alliance, DMDK will now fight in 104 constituencies, MDMK 29, TMC 26, VCK, and the Communist Party of India and the Communist Party of India-Marxist 25 seats each.

Speaking to the media, Vasan said the people are looking for a change of government which is open, not corrupt and introduces liquor prohibition.

A minister in the Congress-led UPA government, Vasan broke away from the Congress in 2014 and floated TMC.

Since then he was supportive of the J.Jayalalithaa led AIADMK government and hoped to join the AIADMK alliance.

However his party was left alone with Jayalalithaa announcing the list of her party candidates for 227 seats and seven seats allotted to allies.

It is said Jayalalithaa wanted TMC to contest the polls under her party's two leaves symbol but this was a condition he refused to accede.

Vasan was also wooed by the Bharatiya Janata Party.

After days of suspense he finally joined hands with DMDK-PWF alliance.
