Nguyen Phu Trong has been re-elected the general secretary of the newly-elected 12th Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) at its first plenary held on Wednesday, the media reported.
The official portal of Vietnam's Ministry of Information and Communications and lots of local online newspapers have also quoted the VNA report as saying that Nguyen Phu Trong has been re-elected as the general secretary of the 12th CPVCC, Xinhua reported.
The 12th plenary was held to elect politburo, general secretary, secretariat, central inspection commission and its head on Wednesday.
The result of the elections will be reported to the 12th National Party Congress on Thursday morning. The new general secretary will address the party Congress.
Trong, born in 1944 in Hanoi, holds a doctorate degree. He studied at the Literature Faculty of the Hanoi General University (now the Hanoi National University) from 1963 to 1967 and joined the Communist Party of Vietnam in 1967.
Trong worked at the Document Department of the Communist magazine from December 1967 to July 1968. He was an editor at the magazine's Party Construction Department between July 1968 and August 1973.
Trong worked as a member of the magazine's editing board between March 1989 and April 1990, and became deputy editor-in-chief from May 1990 to August 1991, and editor-in-chief in August 1991.
He was elected to the Communist Party of the Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) in January 1994, re-elected in June 1996, and became deputy secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee in October 1996, and member of the CPVCC's political bureau in December 1997.
Trong assumed secretaryship of the Hanoi Party Committee in January 2000, became chairman of the Central Theoretical Council in 2001, member of the CPVCC in April 2001, and member of the Political Bureau in April 2006.
Trong acted as chairman of the National Assembly from 2006 to 2011.
In January 2011, Trong was elected the general secretary of the 11th CPVCC.
