Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC), was elected the country's President on Tuesday.

Trong was elected at the ongoing sixth session of the 14th National Assembly of Vietnam, reports Xinhua news agency.

He has been a member of the CPVCC's Political Bureau since 1997 and also served as chairman of the National Assembly from 2006 to 2011.

Trong was elected CPVCC General Secretary in 2011 and re-elected in 2016.

On September 23, two days after former President Tran Dai Quang died, Vice President Dang Thi Ngoc Thinh became the Acting President.
