Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday sought the guidance and assistance of villagers to improve the country's rural landscape.

Speaking in Jayapur village, which Modi adopted as part of the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana scheme for MPs, the prime minister said: "I am not adopting Jayapur, but I have come here to request you to adopt me.

"I want you people to guide and assist me on how to improve our villages. I can't learn things by sitting with babus, I need the experience of our villagers."

Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Varanasi - his parliamentary constituency, urged the young generation to be "more attached to villages".

"...the young generation lacks that connection," he said.

Modi said the government and the people of India needed to work together to ensure that the scheme is implemented effectively.
