VLSID conference begins to discuss current trends

The 30th international conference on VLSID (Very Large Scale Integration Design) began here Monday to discuss current trends in the field.

The conference with the theme "Technologies for a connected and secure world" is discussing current topics in VLSID, electronic design automation, electronic system design and enabling technologies.

The five-day event coincides with 16th Embedded Systems International Conference

It has brought together industry-leading companies, top VLSID, embedded systems experts, academicians and over 2000 students.

Inaugurating the conference, Telangana's Minister for Information Technology K.T. Rama Rao said the government would continue support to hardware, particularly electronics and semi-conductors industry.

Dasradha R Gude, General Chair VLSID 2017, described the conference was a confluence of all stakeholders of the ecosystem - industry, academia, researchers, innovators, regulators.

V.K. Saraswat, Member, NITI Ayog, speaking on the VLSID 2017 theme, noted that the government had set up two committees, one to develop a national super computer and another to build a high end processor. Issues faced by the VLSI industry including time to market challenges will also be addressed.

Sanjay Jha, CEO of Global Foundries, in his key-note address, highlighted the rise of IoT and the cloud and their associated technologies and platforms.

Walden C Rhines, CEO of Mentor Graphics said much attention had been focused on viruses and malware in the operating system or application layer. But these only impact a minority of users. "It is in the underlying silicon where the biggest threat to security lies. Any compromise in the hardware can have grave consequences for each and every user," he said.
