The wife of a Trinamool Congress leader, whose death in police custody led to a CBI probe, has won a gram panchayat seat in West Bengal's Hooghly district on Congress ticket, defeating her rival from the state's ruling party.
Manoja Bibi won the Somaspur I gram panchayat seat in Dhaniakhali block. "I am happy people voted for me. I hope to work for development," said an elated Manoja.
Manoja's husband Kazi Naseeruddin was allegedly beaten to death Jan 19 while in the custody of police.
Manoja, earlier a Trinamool supporter, switched her allegiance to the Congress following her husband's death.
