A woman committed suicide by allegedly consuming poisonous substance after being harassed by her husband and in-laws for dowry, police said on Tuesday.

Police said the incident occurred in south Delhi's Sangam Vihar on Monday morning and they came to know when some locals reported the death of Babita Pathak.

"A preliminary probe confirmed that it is a dowry death case. Babita Pathak committed suicide after being harassed by her husband, Arvind Pathak and his family members. We have made a SDM complaint into the matter and the autopsy of deceased was also done," DCP Vijay Kumar told IANS.

"We have registered a case on the basis of autopsy report. Arvind Pathak is being questioned," he added.

Babita, a native of Uttar Pradesh, married Pathak on February 6, 2018.

Her family members alleged that she was being harassed for dowry by him and his parents after a month after marriage.

"My daughter was often assaulted badly by Arvind Pathak whenever they asked her for taking Rs 2 lakh as dowry from me. At the same time, I tried to tackle the issue with Pathak and his family but they later a month after started to harass my daughter again. Now they killed her by giving her poison in food," her father Harishankar Pathak said.
