A young woman was murdered on Wednesday while on a morning walk in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The incident took place in Chiluataal area when an unidentified assailant hit her with a sharp weapon on the head and escaped.

Passersby discovered the profusely bleeding woman, identified as Anjali (24), on the roadside. The attack occurred barely 200 metres from her house.

Family members say they were unaware if the victim, a post graduate in commerce, had someone stalking her. Her father worked in Hyderabad. After taking voluntary retirement in 2004, the family settled in Gorakhpur.
