A woman commuter was stabbed to death inside the luggage coach of a moving train in Maharashtra early Saturday, officials said.
The woman, identified as Panga J. Andheri, aged around 55, boarded the Virar-Churchgate suburban train around 4 a.m. with a bundle of vegetables.
She was a resident of Ghasdongri in Nallasopara suburb.
According to Government Railway Police officials in Vasai, as the train picked up speed, an unidentified person jumped into the compartment and repeatedly stabbed the woman with a knife.
Hearing the woman's screams, the train guard in the adjacent coach stopped the train at Vasai station. She was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead.
A manhunt has been launched for the assailant who jumped out of the train and disappeared in the cover of darkness.
Police suspect robbery to be the motive behind the attack.
