Relations between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee have been stretched taut since the Teesta episode, when Banerjee decided to drop out of the prime minister’s trip to Bangladesh citing differences on the water-sharing agreement. One of her supporters, somewhat hesitantly, even mentioned to her that it would be a good idea to make up with the Congress. After all, Pranabda was very keen. But her reply was rather terse. If Pranabda wanted to become the President of Bangladesh, she said, he was free to go with the prime minister and announce the Teesta water accord. “I want to remain the West Bengal chief minister,” she said.
