One index of the depths to which electioneering has descended could be seen at an election rally addressed by Karnataka Chief Minister and senior Congressman Siddaramaiah. Commenting on opposition leaders, he poked fun at H D Deve Gowda (HDD) of the Janata Dal (Secular) and D V Sadananda Gowda (DVS) of the Bharatiya Janata Party for their habitual signature expressions. Sadananda Gowda always seems to be smiling, he said and Deve Gowda always looks melancholy. "So," the CM said "one should not invite HDD to a happy occasion because he always seems to be in mourning, and DVS should not be invited to a sad occasion like death because he's always smiling."
