The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sought clarification from the Cabinet Secretariat regarding a part-time member of the Telecom Commission, who was secretary of the erstwhile Planning Commission. The Telecom Commission is the highest policy-making body of the department and traditionally, has a representative from the erstwhile Planning Commission. In a letter, the DoT has asked whether the secretary of the now-defunct Planning Commission should be replaced with the CEO of the NITI Aayog (which replaced the 65-year-old institution) and whether the DoT should move a Cabinet note seeking a change in the constitution of the Commission or whether the change would be notified by the Cabinet Secretariat.
