This refers to Kanika Datta's Lunch With BS, "Tour of duty", with Ashok Gulati (March 22). The article contains a wealth of knowledge about how a technical person can function within the government effectively and also implement lessons that we teach in academics, from managerial economics to enterprise resource management. The first time I had read Gulati's work was when he wrote an article on the protection of cotton in India, which was a pioneering work. Later, I had participated in a World Bank/World Trade Organisation conference in Nepal where he had presented his work on relative subsidies in agriculture in comparison with the manufacturing sector. His way of looking at subsidies holistically was appreciated by several key economists during the conference. His thoughts on leadership are valuable for the future prime minister of India. What I would like to ask him is how to ensure that markets play a major role in encouraging leaders to think holistically about the economy rather than the need for leaders to take a pledge in that regard.
