Letters: A mixed bag

The National Democratic Alliance government's 19-month regime has been a mix of disappointment and hope. Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a lot of promises and everyone - industrialists and small farmers alike - saw in him someone who would fulfil their expectations.

The first nine months went by in revelry and adjusting to the new atmosphere. Modi made waves abroad with his trips although murmurs had started that the government was not delivering as promised.

The masses had become alert and the Delhi Assembly elections in February saw Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffer a big defeat. Farmers hit by drought wanted Modi to take time out from his foreign visits and save them; everybody else wanted him to arrest the rise of food-grain prices. With no achhe din in sight, the Bihar electorate sent Modi and his party packing to Delhi.

Despite these setbacks, Modi commands the goodwill of many. The masses are still waiting for him to deliver on at least two fronts: bullet train and food-grain.
