This refers to the report "Genetically modified crops' field trials put on hold" (July 30). This wishy-washy decision-making in New Delhi shows the difficulties involved in taking a decision on genetically modified (GM) crops. One of the benefits of GM crops is that they demand less chemicals and help reduce the chemical run-offs in water. In order to do a full benefit and cost analysis of GM crops, the Ministry of Environment should publish the data on the pollution of water in rivers, canals and lakes where farmers have adopted intensive agriculture. The ministry should also release information on what it plans to do to reduce pollution in highly polluted areas. The experience in Brazil and the US shows that GM crops can reduce pollution in water sources. This type of enquiry will calm fears of organisations such as the Swadeshi Jagaran Manch that are excessively worried about the introduction and adoption of GM crops in India.
