At a camp held under the aegis of the Dalit Sena, Union Minister of Food and Civil Supplies Ram Vilas Paswan spoke in favour of 50 per cent reservation in the private sector. Quota or no quota, there are people from the backward classes working in the private sector.

At a time when reservations in government departments should be phased out, the demand for quota in the private sector seems unjustified. Denial of jobs and scant opportunities for the majority of people in India are driving the youth to take up employment abroad. More reservations would only induce brain drain.

Dr B R Ambedkar sought reservation for 10 years after the Constitution was written, but successive governments have continued with reservations to protect the vote banks of their political parties. The demand for quota in the private sector would only further divide society along caste lines.
