Letters: Not a silver bullet

An ordinance has granted a year's reprieve to state governments from the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). What the situation would be a year later is anybody's guess.

At least the country is now focusing on the medical education system that was drifting at the hands of private institutions with vested interests. But what about the core oversight agency, the Medical Council of India (MCI)? From certifying medical colleges and the curriculum and examination methodology to oversight on ethical practices of doctors, the MCI is omnipresent. Sadly, it remains short of trustworthiness. This key nodal institution requires an overhaul by the time NEET returns. NEET is not a silver bullet.
