Letters: Put the country first

It is good that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suffered a jolt in the Bihar Assembly elections. A strong Opposition is a must in a democratic set-up. The BJP lost Bihar because of the caste factor and its failure to control the damage caused by recent controversies.

Despite the lofty promises the party made to the electorate, it failed to solve the problems of the common man. Instead of launching new schemes, it is better to concentrate on implementing a few existing ones. It is unfortunate that some tainted leaders won in the elections, but politicians must rise above vote bank politics and think of the country, not particular castes or regions. Regionalism hinders economic growth. Local politicians must give priority to the state but not at the cost of causing loss to the country. They must not indulge in cheap gimmicks to garner votes.
