Caught between the brutality of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria and the Islamic State's onslaught in the region, people fleeing the bombs, chemical weapon attacks, beheadings and starvation are driven by an overriding need to escape from what has essentially become hell on earth.

Pictures of a drowned Syrian boy washed up on a Turkish beach brings home the horror of the escalating refugee crisis. Turkey has taken in around two million Syrian, Arab, Kurd, Shia and Sunni Muslims and Christian refugees with open arms. Amid this escalating refugee crisis, how can Arab leaders afford to enjoy lavish lifestyles? An apathetic world has allowed this crisis - now in its fourth year - to swell.
