This refers to the report "Sugar factories facing severe crisis" (August 9). A high cost of production and processing are fruitful only when followed by lucrative returns. The crisis that sugar factories are facing today is that of a fall in market demand and an increase in supply of sugar products. The best way to overcome this is to create competition among sugar cane cultivators. Sugar factories should only take produce of a very high quality from them. This will not only withdraw excess supply of the crop from the market, but also compel rejected cultivators to go in for other crops. It will prevent the concentration of agricultural produce to just one crop and ensure optimum use of fertile land. This will benefit both the sugar factories and cultivators by ensuring an equitable distribution of demand and supply of sugar cane produce in the market. This balanced by the release of the crops sown by other cultivators will provide more variety in the market.
