Letters: Speaking observation

Here is a story that did the rounds in the early 1950s after the formation of the first Lok Sabha. Since Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru often referred to British practices on various issues, a group of MPs requested him to organise a trip to the UK for them, which he did. On their return, one of the MPs told Nehru that he found education was very widespread in the UK. Asked how he came to this conclusion, the MP is reported to have said that even the children there spoke in English!
