Letters: Surprising inference

With reference to the column, "An unusual traveller" (September 26), in the fifth paragraph, the writer, Shekhar Gupta, says: "He (Narendra Modi) may not have the moral stature of Nehru or Indira...."

Pt Jawaharlal Nehru's political morality was unquestionable, yet his successor, Lal Bahadur Shastri, stood well above him in this regard. Political morality crashed with the advent of Indira Gandhi in politics. It is said that she substituted political morality with political power and then used it to remain in office. Her decision to nationalise 14 banks in July 1969 and six more in April 1980 is a glaring example of this attitude. During her time, the Prime Minister's Office lost its moral stature. It is quite surprising that the writer ranks Gandhi high on moral stature.
